Tips for NYPD Police Officer Candidates…

When going through the NYPD hiring process it is important for Candidates to be engaged and respond promptly throughout the process. The quicker a Candidate responds back to their investigator, fills out their paperwork and schedules their appointments, the faster the process will go.

Candidates should also know that there are 3 things that will immediately disqualify them from becoming a Police Officer; (1) A felony conviction; (2) A domestic violence misdemeanor conviction; and/or, (3) A dishonorable discharge from the military.

The best advice for Candidates going through the process is to ALWAYS be truthful. Regardless of how much you may want to sugarcoat your past, it is always better to be truthful with the investigator. Lying about your background can only hurt you in the end, since the NYPD will review your history in its totality anyway. There is a chance you may not be disqualified for something you were truthful about, but there is a high probability you will be disqualified for lying or intentionally omitting important facts about yourself and/or your history.

Master Your NYPD Oral Psychological Interview

Master Your NYPD Oral Psychological Interview: The oral psychological interview is a make-or-break moment in the NYPD appeal process. In this post we will provide valuable insights on how to approach and succeed in the interview, ensuring you leave a lasting positive impression.

Candidates should expect their Oral Psychological Evaluation to be very stressful. This challenging environment is done by design. Candidates must realize that they are applying for one of the most important and stressful jobs, in which many unforeseen problems can and will arise, and they MUST be ready, willing and able to handle those challenges in a quick, calm and professional manner. Your Evaluator will be making the determination as to whether or not you are capable of handling the challenges Police Officers face daily, based on many factors, including body language, attitude and your responses to different questions and situations. You must be prepared both physically and mentally for your Oral Psychological Evaluation.

Following, are some basic tips you should keep in mind before, during and after your Evaluation:

You should arrive promptly, dress appropriately, have a good attitude when meeting with your Evaluator (smile, address them by name, speak firmly and clearly, maintain eye contact, extend your hand to offer a firm handshake and when invited to sit, be sure to sit upright, not slouching). Moreover, NEVER let your Evaluator see you frustrated, angry or crying for any reason at any time, as this is all part of the evaluation process to “test” your capabilities for the job. Remember, you are on a job interview, and it is your attitude, body language and responses that are being evaluated. You should present yourself as if you are already a Police Officer if you would like the Evaluator to see you as one. Finally, keep your answers short and sweet, unless your Evaluator requests you to do otherwise.
