NYPD Hiring Process

Once you have taken the exam, the NYC Department for Citywide Administration Services (DCAS) will generate your “list number”. List numbers are generated only to Candidates who pass the exam and are generated by exam score (meaning the higher your score, the lower your list number will be).

After you pass the exam, the NYPD’s Candidate Assessment Division will email you an invitation to create a NYPD Candidate Portal account. Through this Portal, you will required to complete the Personal History Questionnaire, as this is where your assessment process starts. During this time you will be asked to prepare and upload additional documents through the Portal (which you can find at NYPD Candidate Portal (nypdonline.org)

At your first interview you will be required to bring and/or upload certain documentation. A list of the items you will be required to upload and/or bring will be listed on your NYPD Candidate Portal after you complete your Personal History Questionnaire.

You can expect the hiring process to take an average of 6 months to 1 year to be hired. It rare cases the process can take as little as 2 months or as long as 4 years depending upon each candidate’s situation. Your exam is valid for four years from the date your list number is established.

Advice for NYPD Police Officer Candidates

When going through the NYPD hiring process it is important for Candidates to be engaged and respond promptly throughout the process. The quicker a Candidate responds back to their investigator, fills out their paperwork and schedules their appointments, the faster the process will go.

Candidates should also know that there are 3 things that will immediately disqualify them from becoming a Police Officer; (1) A felony conviction; (2) A domestic violence misdemeanor conviction; and/or, (3) A dishonorable discharge from the military.

The best advice for Candidates going through the process is to ALWAYS tell the truth. Regardless of how much you may want to sugarcoat your past, it is always better to be truthful with the investigator. Lying about your background can only hurt you in the end, since the NYPD will review your history in its totality anyway. There is a chance you may not be disqualified for something you were truthful about, but there is a high probability you will be disqualified for lying or intentionally omitting important facts about yourself and/or your history.

The NYPD Police Officer Exam

The first step a Candidate must take to become a NYPD Police Officer is to pass the written exam, which is administered by the NYC Department for Citywide Administration Services (DCAS). There are a total of 55 questions that must be completed on the exam. Candidates have two hours to complete the exam, and are permitted to take notes. However, Candidates are NOT allowed to bring their your own scrap paper to the testing site. Before the exam begins, the Proctors will provide Candidates with scrap paper and something to write with.

Although the exam score is generated automatically, Candidates should expect to wait approximately 6 months for the NYC DCAS to generate the Certified List.

NYPD Physical Assessment

What is the Job Standard Test (also known as JST)?

The JST is a Physical Assessment used by the NYPD in which Candidates must finish a continuous physical test in 4 minutes and 28 seconds to pass. It includes sprinting 50 feet, getting over a barrier, climbing stairs, demonstrating the ability to physically restrain someone, running (as if in pursuit), dragging a 176-pound mannequin 35 feet (as if rescuing someone) and demonstrating the ability to handle an unloaded firearm.

There are no BMI/body size requirements to join the NYPD, but getting into physical shape for the JST is strongly encouraged as it will make it easier to pass, which is a mandatory requirement in order to be hired as a NYPD police officer. If Candidates fail their first attempt, they will be offered tutoring and be allowed additional opportunities to pass the exam.

What Psychological History will Prevent me from being Hired by the NYPD?

There are no specific mental health issues in a Candidate’s past that the NYPD would automatically disqualify them for. Each Candidate’s mental health history is considered on a case by case basis. However, all Candidate’s with a history of mental health issues, should be prepared to answer any and all questions about their mental health diagnoses, including past and/or present treatment(s), as well as any therapy and/or medications they may have received, the circumstances and symptoms surrounding their mental health history, and how each of these items have affected both their past and present situation.
