NYPD Police Officer Candidate Advice

NYPD Police Officer Candidate Advice…

When going through the NYPD hiring process it is important for Candidates to be engaged and respond promptly throughout the process. The quicker a Candidate responds back to their investigator, fills out their paperwork and schedules their appointments, the faster the process will go.

Candidates should also know that there are 3 things that will immediately disqualify them from becoming a Police Officer; (1) A felony conviction; (2) A domestic violence misdemeanor conviction; and/or, (3) A dishonorable discharge from the military.

The best advice for Candidates going through the process is to ALWAYS be truthful. Regardless of how much you may want to sugarcoat your past, it is always better to be truthful with the investigator. Lying about your background can only hurt you in the end, since the NYPD will review your history in its totality anyway. There is a chance you may not be disqualified for something you were truthful about, but there is a high probability you will be disqualified for lying or intentionally omitting important facts about yourself and/or your history.

Reasons the NYPD Psychologically Disqualifies Candidates

75+ Google Reviews for the  Law Firm of Kevin P. Sheerin

All NYPD Candidates must go through the Psychological Evaluation process, and some will receive a psychological disqualification after going through such process. There are numerous reasons why a Candidate might receive a psychological disqualification. It could be that the NYPD Psychologist felt the candidate had psychological issues that would adversely affect their ability to effectively perform their duties. It could also be that the psychologist simply made a mistake. If a Candidate feels that they were erroneously disqualified, they should appeal their disqualification with the hopes of getting a new assessment from an independent psychologist that could give them a more accurate assessment of their psychological makeup and possibly get their disqualification decision reversed. Candidates can receive psychological disqualifications for such things as, poor stress management, anger issues, racial bias or many other issues that might deem them unfit for police work.

Kevin is a retired NYPD Captain who specializes in NYPD Disqualification Appeals. He has more than 20 years of experience helping Candidates appeal and reverse their disqualification.

If you have been disqualified for any reason and would like to schedule a free consultation, please contact Kevin Sheerin at 516 248 0040.

75+ Google Reviews for the  Law Firm of Kevin P. Sheerin

May, 2023: “I hired the Law Office of Kevin Sheerin to appeal my disqualification for DCAS Custodial Engineer. DCAS reversed my disqualification!” – Bryan A.

April, 2023: “Going through a NOPD or DQ is a really stressful and daunting process. When it came time to go before the NYC Civil Service Commission, I felt confident having Mr. Sheerin represent me. My DQ was ultimately reversed.”  – Taylor S

March, 2023: “Kevin Sheerin is the best attorney for your psychological disqualification appeal cases. He definitely helped me pass my psychological interview with the NYPD. I highly recommend.”-Julio B.

February, 2023: “…I hired Kevin back in 2020 to appeal my NOPD… and it was once again denied. Kevin told me if I ever did the process again to call him. I told him I probably won’t…, but if anything I’ll call. Jump forward to 2022 and there I am in the process again. To my surprise Kevin never attempted to make money from me but rather reviewed my last NOPD and prepared me for my upcoming interview. I believe it’s with his words of wisdom and guidance that I was successful. His advice was important and yet simple that I was probably too arrogant to see. In the end it worked out for me by the guidance of Kevin and I thank him so much for keeping in contact with me even though he wasn’t seeking money, but rather to make sure I was able to join the NYPD.” – Aleem H.

If you have been disqualified for any reason and would like a chance to have your disqualification reversed, we strongly urge you to contact Kevin at 516.248.0040 to discuss any questions you may have about your NYPD disqualification.

NYPD Background Investigations

75+ Google Reviews for the  Law Firm of Kevin P. Sheerin

The NYPD Police Officer Background Investigation is a long and intricate process in which an Investigator will delve deeply into your personal life in order to get a full picture of who you are, including facts about your past and present relationships, and employment and personal activities. How long it takes depends on how extensive your personal facts are (i.e.: have you lived in many places or only a few, have you had many jobs or just one, etc.). Based on the facts discovered during the Background Investigation, the process can take anywhere from several weeks to several months or longer.

If you are applying for a federal law enforcement position, the Investigation process is even more extensive (i.e.: collecting fingerprints, completing Questionnaires for National Security Positions, polygraphs and a background investigation). The process could take a year or more, since most of federal law enforcement positions require the candidate obtain security clearance before they are deemed eligible for access to classified information.

Regardless of the law enforcement position you are applying for, you must be patient, as the background investigation is a lengthy process and you will need to remain at the disposal of the hiring agency until the process is complete.

NYPD Police Officer Opportunities

75+ Google Reviews for the  Law Firm of Kevin P. Sheerin

The NYPD, as well as other law enforcement agencies around the country are currently understaffed due to an increase in retirements and resignations. Some agencies are also struggling to recruit new law enforcement officers. In an effort to overcome these obstacles, some agencies are creating new ideas and incentives (such as signing bonuses and retention pay).

These incentives, in addition to the more traditional ones (i.e.: job security, excellent benefits and an opportunity for early retirement) offer more NYPD Police Officer opportunities and make this career even more attractive. These challenges for law enforcement agencies, offer applicants an excellent opportunity (and perhaps even some leverage), in successfully securing a position as a law enforcement professional.

If you failed your NYPD Psychological Evaluation or have been disqualified for any reason and would like to schedule a free consultation, please contact Kevin Sheerin at 516.248.0040.
