Advice for NYPD Police Officer Candidates

When going through the NYPD hiring process it is important for Candidates to be engaged and respond promptly throughout the process. The quicker a Candidate responds back to their investigator, fills out their paperwork and schedules their appointments, the faster the process will go.

Candidates should also know that there are 3 things that will immediately disqualify them from becoming a Police Officer; (1) A felony conviction; (2) A domestic violence misdemeanor conviction; and/or, (3) A dishonorable discharge from the military.

The best advice for Candidates going through the process is to ALWAYS be truthful. Regardless of how much you may want to sugarcoat your past, it is always better to be truthful with the investigator. Lying about your background can only hurt you in the end, since the NYPD will review your history in its totality anyway. There is a chance you may not be disqualified for something you were truthful about, but there is a high probability you will be disqualified for lying or intentionally omitting important facts about yourself and/or your history.

Jason WA month ago (January, 2023)

I recently applied to become a police officer for the New York Police Department. After going through the process, I was scheduled for my first psychological interview. I received an email that I was disqualified. I hired Kevin right away when I received the rejection letter. I knew this could impact any future law enforcement hiring.

He guided me through the general appeal process, figured out what likely caused the disqualification. Because of him and his staff’s experience I got a second psychological test opportunity. I passed and will be starting the academy. The appeal process has timelines and requirements that require an expert’s assistance and your willingness to follow their advice.

The process takes a few months. I had to retake tests that I passed like the physical due to time lapse, but it was worth it, and so was hiring Kevin. He is your best chance at having a timely and strong appeal if you contact him right after the disqualification.

So I hired Kevin back in 2020 to appeal my NOPD from the NYPD, and it was once again denied. Kevin told me if I ever did the process again to call him, I told him I probably won’t do it again but if anything I’ll call. Jump forward to 2022 and there I am in the process again. To my surprise Kevin never attempted to make money from me but rather review my last NOPD and prepare me for my upcoming interview. I believe it’s with his words of wisdom and guidance that I was successful. His advices for important and yet simple that I was probably too arrogant to see. In the end it worked out for me by the guidance of Kevin and I thank him so much for keeping in contact with me even though he wasn’t seeking money, but rather to make sure I was able to join the NYPD.

What drugs disqualify a person from becoming a police officer?

Each agency has their own policy regarding drug use including how long ago the drug use was, the type of drug(s), and the amount used. Of course, any current drug abuse is an automatic disqualifier.

Some agencies do not disqualify applicants for prior marijuana use provided that it has not occurred within the past several years. Most agencies remove candidates who have used drugs such as cocaine, hallucinogens, modern designer drugs, heroin, etc.

In most cases the requirement is that a candidate should not have used any drugs for the past few years, and in most departments any prior drug abuse may be a disqualifier. Some departments do not disqualify applicants for limited experimental use. However, that use only applies to certain drugs and during a certain time frame in that persons past.

If you want to apply for a higher position or start work at a federal level, the requirements are generally much stricter.

If you receive a NYPD Disqualification please contact me at 516-248-0040 and we can arrange for a free phone or in-office consultation.
