Hire an Experienced Attorney to Appeal Your NYPD Psychological Disqualification

If you received a Psychological Disqualification, it is imperative that you seek the legal advice of a highly-skilled attorney, experienced in handling these types of civil service cases. You must also act fast, as you only have 30 days to initiate your appeal.

Even if you decide you no longer wish to pursue the position you were disqualified for, you should still appeal your disqualification rather than withdraw. What to Do if You Receive a Psychological Disqualification

If you received a NYPD psychological disqualification, you should appeal it as soon as possible. You will want to hire an expert attorney to help navigate you through the appeals process. You will also need to hire an independent psychologist who will evaluate your fitness for the job. An independent psychologist will review the report originally issued by the NYPD Psychologist who disqualified you. Your psychologist will then interview you, administer various psychological tests, and write a rebuttal report to the Civil Service Commission rebutting the contents of the NYPD Psychologist’s report and providing facts and test results explaining why you are qualified and fit to serve as a NYPD Police Officer. Although hiring an independent psychologist does not guarantee that your disqualification will be reversed, it is certainly a prudent choice and your best option.

You Should Always Appeal A Psychological Disqualification

Even if you have no intention of pursuing the position you were disqualified for, you should always appeal your psychological disqualification, because if you do not, that psychological disqualification will follow you and become a red flag for other law enforcement agencies.  

All major law enforcement and public safety agencies in the country conduct pre-appointment psychological screenings of prospective officers, and although they make every effort to conduct their screenings in an in-depth, fair, and reasonable manner, the unfortunate truth is that many Candidates are psychologically disqualified for no valid reason. Furthermore, this improper disqualification then follows the Candidate when they decide to apply for other law enforcement positions in other jurisdictions. 

Therefore, it is imperative that you fight back by appealing your disqualification.

NYPD Police Academy Salary and Expenses

Candidates are often curious, (a) if they will receive any type of compensation while in the Academy, (b) if they are entitled to any type of benefits, and (c) what their hours will be. The answer to all of these questions are as follows:

Candidates can expect to receive a starting salary of around $42,500 and to receive medical and dental benefits, which all begin at the start of the Academy. However, a Candidates hours are dependent upon the Police Academy training schedule.

Candidates also want to know whether they will incur any type of expenses during the Academy. The answer is Yes – Candidates will incur certain expenses in connection with the Academy. They will be required to purchase training uniforms and equipment totaling around $2,500, which costs break down as follows:

  • $550.00 at the start of the Academy (for basic uniform and class items);
  • $1,100.00 within the first 3-4 weeks, for equipment purchased in the NYPD Equipment Section; and,
  • $850.00 for items to be purchased after the 1st trimester exam.

If needed, options for payment and loans will be made available to Candidates once they are in the Police Academy.

Advice for NYPD Police Officer Candidates

When going through the NYPD hiring process it is important for Candidates to be engaged and respond promptly throughout the process. The quicker a Candidate responds back to their investigator, fills out their paperwork and schedules their appointments, the faster the process will go.

Candidates should also know that there are 3 things that will immediately disqualify them from becoming a Police Officer; (1) A felony conviction; (2) A domestic violence misdemeanor conviction; and/or, (3) A dishonorable discharge from the military.

The best advice for Candidates going through the process is to ALWAYS be truthful. Regardless of how much you may want to sugarcoat your past, it is always better to be truthful with the investigator. Lying about your background can only hurt you in the end, since the NYPD will review your history in its totality anyway. There is a chance you may not be disqualified for something you were truthful about, but there is a high probability you will be disqualified for lying or intentionally omitting important facts about yourself and/or your history.
