Received a Psychological Disqualification? – Should You Withdraw or Appeal?

When a NYPD Candidate is psychologically disqualified, they are provided the opportunity to Withdraw from the NYPD Application Process. However, what most Candidates do not know and/or understand is that if they exercise this right to Withdraw, their psychological file (and the psychological disqualification therein) will remain a permanent part of their NYPD file, and such records can and will be used against the Candidate at any time in the future by any law enforcement agency. Therefore, it is imperative that all NYPD Candidates who are psychologically disqualified start their appeal process immediately to have their disqualification reversed and their name cleared.

Kevin is a retired NYPD Captain who specializes in NYPD Disqualification Appeals. He has more than 20 years of experience helping Candidates appeal and reverse their disqualification.

Kevin can also assist you with hiring the RIGHT mental health professional (MHP), as your MHP will review the NYPD Psychologist’s report and rebut all of the issues raised in their disqualification. Kevin has been working with highly skilled and experienced Psychologists for many years, who specialize in this area of psychology and who can help you with your appeal.

The NYPD Hiring Process

The NYPD Hiring Process….

Once you have taken the exam, the NYC Department for Citywide Administration Services (DCAS) will generate your “list number”. List numbers are generated only to Candidates who pass the exam and are generated by exam score (meaning the higher your score, the lower your list number will be).

After you pass the exam, the NYPD’s Candidate Assessment Division will email you an invitation to create a NYPD Candidate Portal account. Through this Portal, you will required to complete the Personal History Questionnaire, as this is where your assessment process begins. During this time you will be asked to prepare and upload additional documents through the Portal (which you can find at NYPD Candidate Portal (nypdonline.org)

At your first interview you will be required to bring and/or upload certain documentation. A list of the items you will be required to upload and/or bring will be listed on your NYPD Candidate Portal after you complete your Personal History Questionnaire.

You can expect the hiring process to take an average of 6 months to 1 year to be hired. It rare cases the process can take as little as 2 months or as long as 4 years depending upon each candidate’s situation. Your exam is valid for four years from the date your list number is established.

NYPD Police Officer Candidate Advice

NYPD Police Officer Candidate Advice…

When going through the NYPD hiring process it is important for Candidates to be engaged and respond promptly throughout the process. The quicker a Candidate responds back to their investigator, fills out their paperwork and schedules their appointments, the faster the process will go.

Candidates should also know that there are 3 things that will immediately disqualify them from becoming a Police Officer; (1) A felony conviction; (2) A domestic violence misdemeanor conviction; and/or, (3) A dishonorable discharge from the military.

The best advice for Candidates going through the process is to ALWAYS be truthful. Regardless of how much you may want to sugarcoat your past, it is always better to be truthful with the investigator. Lying about your background can only hurt you in the end, since the NYPD will review your history in its totality anyway. There is a chance you may not be disqualified for something you were truthful about, but there is a high probability you will be disqualified for lying or intentionally omitting important facts about yourself and/or your history.

Reasons the NYPD Psychologically Disqualifies Candidates

75+ Google Reviews for the  Law Firm of Kevin P. Sheerin

All NYPD Candidates must go through the Psychological Evaluation process, and some will receive a psychological disqualification after going through such process. There are numerous reasons why a Candidate might receive a psychological disqualification. It could be that the NYPD Psychologist felt the candidate had psychological issues that would adversely affect their ability to effectively perform their duties. It could also be that the psychologist simply made a mistake. If a Candidate feels that they were erroneously disqualified, they should appeal their disqualification with the hopes of getting a new assessment from an independent psychologist that could give them a more accurate assessment of their psychological makeup and possibly get their disqualification decision reversed. Candidates can receive psychological disqualifications for such things as, poor stress management, anger issues, racial bias or many other issues that might deem them unfit for police work.
