You failed the NYPD Psychological – Now What?

75+ Google Reviews for the Law Firm of Kevin P. Sheerin

If you fail the NYPD Psychological Test you will receive (by email) a Notice of Proposed Disqualification (NOPD) stating that you are psychologically disqualified from the NYPD Police Officer title. You have thirty days from the date of the NOPD to appeal. For a successful outcome, it is wise to hire both an attorney and a psychologist who are experienced in the appeal process and who will help you file a rebuttal report. This report will be sent to the NYPD Candidate Assessment Division for review.

After your psychologist’s rebuttal report is reviewed you may receive an email directing you to come in for another interview with a NYPD psychologist. During that interview the psychologist will review the reports prepared by both the original NYPD psychologist and your expert psychologist. You can expect to be questioned on any inconsistencies between the reports and the problem areas found by the first NYPD Psychologist who disqualified you. This re-interview is an important step in the appeal process and should not be taken lightly. Be sure to hire both a seasoned Attorney and Mental Health Professional who are experienced in this type of appeal process.

Kevin Sheerin is an experienced civil service disqualification appeals attorney, with extensive knowledge on how to appeal your Disqualification. Over the years he has helped many clients win their appeal. He can help you too.

Will Anti-depressants Prevent NYPD from hiring me?

75+ Google Reviews for the Law Firm of Kevin P. Sheerin

A Candidate will not be automatically disqualified from being hired as a police officer by the NYPD because they have taken certain medications. However, like psychotherapy, the NYPD will carefully assess and closely evaluate a candidate’s use of any medication. The NYPD will want to know, in full detail, the reasons why the Candidate was prescribed the medication, the symptoms the medication was meant to address, how the candidate did while on the medication, and the length of time the candidate took the medication. As always, candidates should be fully prepared to disclose the name of the medication, as well as the dosage and length of time if was prescribed.

What does the psychological exam entail?

75+ Google Reviews for the Law Firm of Kevin P. Sheerin

The NYPD Police Officer written exam is long and tedious. You will want to be prepared, as you will be expected to complete a detailed autobiographical questionnaire, answer questions about your current and prior health status and provide extensive information, including objective personality inventory measures.

In addition, you should be prepared for a one-on-one oral interview with a NYPD psychologist who will ask you questions about your educational, employment, psychological, medical and legal history, as well as past and present social relationships. The oral interview will take approximately 1 hour.

There are steps you can take to help yourself with both the written tests and oral interview. First and foremost, ALWAYS be open, honest and candid with your answers. In addition, be prepared by bringing your resume, transcripts and any other relevant documentation you think might be helpful.

What Psychological History will Prevent the NYPD from Hiring a Candidate?

Can a candidate who has had psychotherapy in the past become a NYPD Police Officer?

The NYPD does not automatically disqualify a candidate for having received psychological counseling or any other form of mental health treatment. However, they will carefully review all of the facts regarding a candidate’s mental health history and consider each and every detail.

If a candidate does have a history of mental health problems, they should be prepared to thoroughly answer any and all questions about their psychological past, including their mental health diagnoses and their past or current treatment(s) (including therapy they underwent and/or medications they were prescribed). Candidates should also be ready, willing and able to provide all of the details, circumstances and symptoms regarding their mental health history, and how these details, circumstances and symptoms have affected them both currently and in the past.
