Is it Difficult to Pass the Police Academy?

75+ Google Reviews for the Law Firm of Kevin P. Sheerin

Once hired as a police recruit, prospective officers attend the New York City Police Academy. The rigorous training program lasts six months. The NYPD requires 913 hours of training for their new recruits, which is higher than the New York state-mandated requirement of 700 hours. Of the 913 hours of training: 269 hours are focused on academics, 150 hours on physical tactics, 105 hours on firearms and 28 hours on driver training. The additional 361 hours are used for additional add-on trainings and presentations.

Courses cover such topics as law, behavioral science, physical training and tactics, police science, firearms training, and First Aid/ CPR. Classes in terrorism, identity theft, and other advanced law enforcement skills are also part of the curriculum.

Recruits must pass 4 separate exams with a score of 75% or higher to graduate from the academy and be sworn in as an NYPD Police Officer.

Did you receive a NYPD Psychological Disqualification? Choose your MHP Carefully!

75+ Google Reviews for the Law Firm of Kevin P. Sheerin

If you receive a NYPD NOPD psychological disqualification you should interview the psychologist you want to hire to represent you VERY CAREFULLY or face severe regrets afterwards.

There are psychologists charging very low fees to represent disqualified NYPD candidates in psychological disqualification appeals which may seem like a great chance to get reinstated to the NYPD Police Officer eligible list. However, what is not revealed is that these psychologists will report that you are NOT PSYCHOLOGICALLY QUALIFIED for the position of police officer and will mail a report saying that as part of your appeal.

In order to avoid this crucial mistake, before hiring a psychologist to represent you in your psychological disqualification appeal you should:

  1. Ask the psychologist what their fee includes.
  2. Ask will they let you know if they are going to write a report that agrees with the NYPD that you are “psychologically unsuitable”.
  3. Ask to see the report before they send it.
  4. Have them agree upfront that they will not send the report if they cannot support your candidacy.

Sometimes a great price may generate the report that prevents you from ever becoming a law enforcement officer. Therefore, you MUST ask these questions in advance to save yourself from heartache as a result of a terrible psychological report.

Does Depression and/or Anxiety Affect NYPD Police Officers?

75+ Google Reviews for the Law Firm of Kevin P. Sheerin

Many people go through periods in their lives when things seem hopeless or overwhelming. The first step toward a solution is to speak with someone.

Seeking help is never a sign of weakness. If a Police Officer is dealing with a problem of any kind, they should contact and utilize the services offered to them both inside and outside the NYPD. No one should ever shoulder their burden alone. There are trained members ready, willing and able to listen and help 24 hours a day.

Working as a NYPD Police Officer means spending your day helping others. However, before you can take care of others, you must first take care of yourself.

If you are a NYPD Candidate who has received a NYPD disqualification and would like to schedule a free consultation, please contact Kevin Sheerin at 516.248.0040.

I Received a NYPD Disqualification – Now What?

75+ Google Reviews for the Law Firm of Kevin P. Sheerin

DCAS is New York City’s personnel department. DCAS has delegated the task of investigating applicants to the NYPD. You can appeal your NYPD disqualification. Applicants who are disqualified from appointment may challenge an agency’s findings on the grounds that such findings were made in bad faith or were arbitrary and capricious.

There are three potential appeals:

  1. NOPD – Notice of Proposed Disqualification. Based on NYS Civil Service Law 50(4) a hiring agency must give a disqualified candidate an opportunity to provide explanations for a proposed disqualification in writing.
  2. NOD – Notice of Disqualification. A disqualified candidate can appeal a disqualification to the Civil Service Commission.
  3.  If the disqualification is upheld by the Civil Service Commission the candidate can file an Article 78 lawsuit in the New York State Supreme Court in the County concerned.
