What Psychological History will Prevent me from being Hired by the NYPD?

There are no specific mental health issues in a Candidate’s past that the NYPD would automatically disqualify them for. Each Candidate’s mental health history is considered on a case by case basis. However, all Candidate’s with a history of mental health issues, should be prepared to answer any and all questions about their mental health diagnoses, including past and/or present treatment(s), as well as any therapy and/or medications they may have received, the circumstances and symptoms surrounding their mental health history, and how each of these items have affected both their past and present situation.

Will Anti-Depressant Medication Use Prevent the NYPD from Hiring Me?

While there are no medications that will automatically disqualify a Candidate from being hired as a police officer, the NYPD will carefully assess and evaluate any medication you have used. They will want to know the reasons you are/were prescribed such medication, the symptoms the medication are/were meant to address, how well the medication worked, and be given a timeline of how long you are/were taking such medication. Candidates should always be prepared to discuss any medications they are/were taking, including the name of the medication(s), the dosages and the timeline for which they were/have been prescribed such medication.

Will Prior Therapy/Counseling Stop NYPD from Hiring Me?

A Candidate will not be disqualified by the NYPD simply because they have attended therapy/counseling. They will however, want to investigate the facts surrounding the therapy/counseling to better understand the circumstances which led the Candidate to seek therapy/counseling in the first place. They will also want to know how the therapy/counseling went , what the focus of the treatment was and how the Candidate has been doing since seeking the therapy/counseling. Candidates should be prepared and ready to discuss the dates they attended therapy/counseling, who their provider was and what the circumstances were that led them to seek treatment in the first place.

The NYPD Psychological Exam: What to Expect

The NYPD written testing is a full day of paperwork, administered in a group setting. Candidates should be prepared to complete autobiographical questionnaires, symptom inventories, and two lengthy objective personality inventory measures.

The oral interview is a one-on-one evaluation with a Psychologist who will ask you questions about your educational, employment, psychological, medical and legal history, as well as your social relationships. Candidates can expect a more in depth interview if the Psychologist believes there are any areas of concern which require closer examination. The oral interview takes approximately 1 hour.

For both the written testing and oral interview, Candidates should come prepared (e.g., bring a resume, transcripts, etc.). And, as always, Candidates should be completely open and honest.

Role of the Interviewing/Screening Psychologist

Screening Psychologists are responsible for collecting, reviewing and integrating test data, personal history information (including pertinent medical records), and clinical interview data, which they then utilize to determine the suitability of a Candidate. Screening Psychologists must be careful to minimize their reliance on impressionistic judgments and maximize their use of evidence-based methods and strategies when making their determination, since, the evaluation of a Candidate’s Psychological Suitability, is, in effect, a key factor used to determine whether a Candidate falls within or outside the parameters of tolerable risk. In essence, the Psychologist’s role is one of risk assessor, requiring them to determine if a Candidate falls within the parameters of acceptable risk.

Peace Officers must be free of any emotional and/or mental condition, including bias against race or ethnicity, gender, nationality, religion, disability, or sexual orientation, which might adversely affect the proper exercise of their powers. Candidates must understand that it is the Screening Psychologist’s responsibility to integrate and evaluate a Candidate’s information against risk management criteria.
