Law Office of Kevin P. Sheerin

If you are in the hiring process for a NYC Civil Service job and you would like to find out when your eligible list expires:

Dial 212-669-1357
Press 2
Enter your social security number

The DCAS help line will tell you when your list was established, and when it will expire. The expiration date is usually 4 years after the list was established or promulgated.

If you received a NYPD Disqualification letter you will need approximately one year to complete your appeal process. You must move swiftly to complete this process. You should write to your investigator and request that action be taken on your file so you have a sufficient amount of time to appeal if you are disqualified.

I have been a civil service disqualification appeals attorney for more than 18 years. During that time I have helped many clients win their appeal. I can help you too.

If you have questions and would like to schedule a free consultation, please contact me at 516 248 0040.

NYPD Psychological Disqualification – Second Interview

Law Office of Kevin P. Sheerin

Good News… There has been an increase in the number of candidates getting their disqualification reversed at second psychological interviews.

However, in order to get a chance at a second interview, you MUST first file a NYPD NOPD Psychological Disqualification Appeal.  If you receive a second interview you are best served to know the issues that were raised in your disqualification and the arguments made by your appeal Mental Health Professional (MHP).

As a civil service appeals attorney with more than 18 years of experience, I have helped many NYPD candidates win their disqualification appeal. I can help you too.

If you are offered a second interview, I will prepare you for the interview.  This preparation is included as part of your appeal representation.

If you receive a NYPD NOPD Psychological Disqualification and would like to schedule a free consultation, please contact me at 516 248 0040.

Know the Facts Before Completing Your APD5

If you want to become a NYPD police officer the first thing you must do is get your Certificates of Disposition to review any arrests or summonses you may have. You should also get your Lifetime Abstract from New York State Department of Motor Vehicles before completing your Applicant Processing forms.

You MUST know the facts about any arrests, moving violations or summonses you may have. If you “guess” and submit inaccurate information, you WILL receive a Notice of Proposed Disqualification (NOPD) stating that you are disqualified for “Omission of Pertinent Facts.” Remember, the NYPD or other hiring agency, such as the NYC Department of Correction or FDNY have access to all of this information so when you submit an incomplete and/or inaccurate form they will compare it to their computer printouts and disqualify you.

If you have questions and would like to schedule a free consultation, contact me at 516-248-0040.

NYPD Psychological Appeal – 1 Chance to Choose an Expert & Obtain NYPD Records

Law Office of Kevin P. Sheerin

With more than 18 years of experience as a NYPD disqualification appeals lawyer I have helped many disqualified candidates who have received either a Notice of Proposed Disqualification (NOPD) or a final Notice of Disqualification (NOD) for psychological reasons from the NYPD.

The NOPD letter provides the candidate with an opportunity to select and hire their own psychological expert and have the NYPD psychological file sent to that expert for review and preparation of a rebuttal report. However, in order for the NYPD psychological file to be released, the disqualified candidate MUST first respond to the NOPD.

It is crucial that the disqualified candidate select a psychologist familiar with the appeals process. ONCE YOU SELECT AN EXPERT TO ASSIST YOU IN YOUR APPEAL YOU WILL MOST LIKELY NOT BE ABLE TO SWITCH EXPERTS LATER.

Also, selecting a psychologist that the candidate formerly had counselling session with is a poor choice.

If you receive a NOPD or NOD from the NYPD Psychological Service Division contact me at 516 248 0040 to discuss your options.

Factors that affect a NYPD Psychological Disqualification

If a candidate had an Individual Education Plan (IEP) in school, some NYPD psychologists will consider that a reason for disqualification. The NYPD psychologist will ask you to sign an authorization to get your school records. When the records are received they will review them and determine if the issues you had in school will effect your candidacy.

If a candidate took ADHD medicine while in school, this may also be considered as a reason for NYPD disqualification. Again, the NYPD psychologist will request an authorization to obtain your records from school, and review them to determine if you should be disqualified on that basis.

You can appeal your disqualification by getting an independent psychologist to help you. They will explain that what happened back in school is not your current condition or state. Often candidates have outgrown the need for medicines, or their condition has not followed them into adulthood.

Of course, if you do not take action, the disqualification will become final and will effect your ability to get any other civil service jobs.
