BE CAREFUL when Hiring a Psychologist for your Appeal

Part of the psychological disqualification appeal process is finding a psychologist who will help you make the strongest arguments for your candidacy. If the psychologist is unable or unwilling to acknowledge your accomplishments, good points and strengths or adversities you have overcome, or your persistence in improving despite past difficulties or disabilities, then you must look for a different psychologist. The psychologist you hire MUST BE ON YOUR SIDE, advocating for you.

Beware of psychologists who charge very low fees, tell you they will help you, and then do a superficial interview, as they may simply use the NYPD’s testing to confirm that you are unsuitable, and then send a report to the NYPD stating that you are unsuitable, without ever telling you. If this happens, not only did they not help you, but they actually destroyed any chance you had of ever becoming a NYPD officer.

You MUST make a clear agreement with any psychologist you hire that they will discuss their findings with you BEFORE sending any report to the NYPD.

The psychologist you are considering MUST understand that they are supposed to be advocating for you, and if they don’t believe you are suitable, then they should tell you they cannot support your candidacy, AND FURTHER AGREE not to submit any report to the NYPD if they come to such a conclusion. If this happens, at least you have an opportunity to find a psychologist who will help and support your appeal.

Reasons You May Receive a NYPD Psychological Disqualification

What you can expect in the NYPD psychological testing process….

The NYPD will give you a written exam consisting of hundreds of questions.  After the examination is scored you will be called to meet with a NYPD Psychological staff member for an oral psychological interview.

You may be asked questions about the answers you gave on the written exam and asked to explain your answers.

You will be questioned about your Educational History, Work History, Driving History, Arrest History (if any), Psychotherapy or medication taken, family and personal relationships as well as other relevant topics.

You will be asked to explain any issues that may arise in connection with any of the above topics.

You may also be asked to provide authorizations for the Psychologist to get documentation from your schools or jobs, which you will have to provide in order to complete the process.

You may receive notice that you have been placed on psychological review.  This review can take some time as other members of the NYPD team review your file.

Increase Your NYPD Appeal Success at the Second Interview

There has been a sharp increase in the percentage of candidates appealing their NYPD NOPD psychological disqualification, and subsequently succeeding at a second interview.

Law Office of Kevin P. Sheerin

However, before you can get a second interview you must first appeal your disqualification.

It is imperative that you obtain all of the facts before you act.

I am available if you would like to discuss the facts surrounding your particular situation and the appeal process for NOPD appeals (“step one”). We can also discuss what happened in the oral psychological interview, some tips and tactics, and how to avoid traps in a second interview, as well as the process for filing an appeal with the New York City Civil Service Commission in the event that you do not succeed at step one. We can also go over how to present the best case in order to get a hearing before the commission and how to succeed at that hearing.

REVIEWS FROM CLIENTS AFTER THEIR SECOND INTERVIEW:

April, 2022 – “Kevin helped me get my disqualification reversed! Very professional and knowledgeable. Highly recommended!” –  S.J.

September, 2021 – “Highly recommend for anyone looking to get on after being disqualified!  I first met with Mr. Sheerin in 2017 after being disqualified from the NYPD.  After going through the process of appeal, commission vacated the disqualification. Later on, I began processing on a new exam and met with Mr. Sheerin to prep for the interview. I am glad to say with his help, I was accepted into the most recent police academy for the NYPD! Don’t give up.” – Ashley A.
